GASTONIA - Jonathan M.W. App, 71, died June 25, 2012 at home.

He was a native of New York, N.Y., son of the late Lucille O'Conner App and John Weber App.
Jonathan spent 22 years in South Africa from 1964 to 1986. He taught high school for six years, then started his own business-S.A. Aloe Experts (Pty) Ltd. After returning to America in 1986, he bought a feed store, which he managed until his retirement in 2002.
Jonathan was an avid sportsman and loved to play basketball, tennis, racquetball and squash. He loved to travel and was fortunate to visit many different countries.
Jonathan was always very involved in the church and community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was Grand Knight in 1999-2000. Jonathan was also very civic minded and served on many boards, including Piedmont Pioneer House, Cornerstone Ministries and Camp Sertoma. He also volunteered at Crisis Assistance Minis-tries for over 10 years.
A devoted father and husband, Jonathan was a wonderful man who will be sadly missed by many.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Gastonia with celebrant, Deacon Art Kingsley officiating.
Burial will be private.
Rosary will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.
The family will receive friends immediately following the rosary from 6 until 8 p.m.
Jonathan is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ria App; daughters, Caroline Lucille App, Gretchen Elizabeth App; brother, Peter App; and a sister, Gretchen Akers.
