He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Reilley McCloskey. He is survived by his six children: Joseph W. McCloskey III and wife Melissa of Columbia S.C., Mary Ellen Osborne and husband Steve of Torrance, Calif., Carey Sharpe and husband Perry of Durham, Joan Herbert and husband David of Charlotte, Margaret Floyd of Charlotte, and Kathryn Dimopoulos and husband John of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands as well as his sister, Florence McCloskey Ray, of Castleton on the Hudson, N.Y. and numerous nephews and a niece. He was a loving "Pop Pop" to 10 grandchildren.

Joe attended Vincentian Institute and graduated from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY. He was a veteran of World War II.
He began his sales career at the Knickerbocker News and from there went to work for the American Oil which resulted in moves to Boston, New York City and Chicago. Wanting to plant roots for his large family of six children, in 1966 Joe took a position as Sales Manager of Wix Filters in Gastonia, NC. Under his guidance and his firmly flexible terms, the Wix brand experienced dynamic growth with Joe advancing to Vice President of Sales. In 1987, Dana Corporation pur-chased Wix and Joe moved to its corporate headquarters in Toledo Ohio as General Manager of the ADS Automotive Group. He retired in 1991 and he and his beloved wife, Patsy moved back to Gastonia.

His family, friends and helping others were his priorities and a cherished way of life for him. Joe was active in St. Michael's Catholic Church, serving on the Parish Council, as a lecturer and as a Sunday school teacher. He was a past chairman of the Board of Directors of Gaston Skills; a past president of Gastonia Noon Optimist Club and served on the board of directors of West Gastonia Girls and Boys Club. His jovial and spiritual nature made him a cherished friend and mentor to all that he encountered.
