GASTONIA - Ruby Brown Smiley, known to family and friends as "Mrs. Ruby", 87, died peacefully on July 14, 2014, at Meadow Wood Nursing Center.

She was born in Belmont on July 11, 1927 and was the daughter of the late Samuel Jones and Emma Shelton Brown.

Mrs. Ruby raised her children as a military homemaker, following her husband, William through his military career for twenty six years. She was a member of Mt. Holly Church of God.

A service to celebrate her life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Holly Church of God with the Rev. Dennis Bean officiating.

Interment will follow in Gaston Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McLean Funeral Directors of Belmont.

Survivors include her sons, James Smiley of Gastonia; Samuel Smiley and wife Mary of Gastonia; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Martha Brown and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sergeant Major, William Bren-ton Smiley; daughter, Becky Smiley Sigmon and brother, Walter Jones Brown.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Holly Church of God, 208 Rankin Ave., Mt. Holly, NC 28120.
