ROCK HILL, S.C. - Sara Ellen Long Abernethy, 91, died Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Westminster Health & Rehab Center in Rock Hill, S.C.
Burial will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 30 in Hollywood Cemetery at 700 N. Broad St., Gastonia, NC 28054 with the Rev. Jack Basie presiding. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. Monday at Westminster Presbyterian Church Chapel, 1300 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732 with Dr. Shelton Sanford officiating.
Visitation will follow the service in the Westminster Hall Parlor.
Born Sept. 27, 1920, in Gastonia, she was the daughter of James Noah Long and Gertrude Clemmer Long. Mrs. Abernethy graduated from Gastonia High School and from Kings Business College in Charlotte. She worked for attorneys Sanders & Mullen and for Duke Power in Gastonia. She was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Ruth Circle and a charter resident of Westminster Towers.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Abernethy was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Joseph "Mr. Joe" Freeman Abernethy; and by brothers Jim, Max, Charles and Earl Long of Gastonia and Carol Long of Tampa, Fla., and by sister, Mildred Mull of Tallahassee Fla., formerly of Gastonia.
Mrs. Abernethy is survived by daughters, JoEllen White (Sonny) of Columbia and Wendy Merrick (Anson) of Rock Hill; grandchildren, Alison White Howell (Brian) of High Point, N.C., Anson (Andy) Merrick IV (Becky) of Chapin, Joshua White (Robyn) of Johnson City, Tenn., and Anna Merrick Thompson (Scott) of Greenville; great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Luke Howell, Anson, Addie and Elise Merrick, and Bentley and Lucas Thompson; sister-in-law, Gertrude Cox Long of Gastonia; and several nieces and nephews.
