GASTONIA - William Lyon Gregory, M.D. R Ph., a resident of Denver, died June 19, 2012 in Gastonia.

Born Aug. 27, 1925, Dr. Gregory was the son of Lemuel L. Gregory, M.D. and Pauline Reynolds Gregory.
Dr. Gregory graduated from Winthrop Training School in 1943, enlisted in the Army Air Corp and was in training to be an Aerial Navigator when World War II ended. Dr. Gregory received a BS degree in Pharmacy from the University of South Carolina in 1951 and moved to Gastonia where he worked as a Pharmacist with Rhyne's Drug Store and met and married Catherine Elizabeth Carter. In 1956 he received his M.D. from the Medical Col-lege of South Carolina and completed his internship at Indianapolis General Hospital 1957.
Dr. Gregory returned to Gastonia that same year and for nearly 40 years served Gaston County residents in the general practice of medicine. After closing his practice, he continued to work in the medical field in Gaston and the surrounding counties. He was a staff member of Gaston Memorial Hospital and the old Garrison General Hospital and served on the committee to plan for the current Gaston Memorial Hospital. He assisted in the Red Cross Bloodmobile program, Cardiac Rehab program, Gaston-Lincoln Area Mental Health Program, was Assistant Medical Director for Stanley Total Living Center, and along with Wilma Matti, RN, took care of prison inmates at the Lincoln County Jail. He assisted in counseling centers in Gaston, Lin-coln and Cleveland Counties and with a Lincoln County drug and alcohol rehab program. For thirty plus years Dr. Gregory was an Airman's Medical Examiner for the FAA and for many years was a physician for the Gaston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing until it moved to Gaston College.
Dr. Gregory continued to use his medical skills and knowledge well past his 80th year of life.
Dr. Gregory loved flying and had a pilot's license with an instrument rating. He enjoyed the time spent piloting the airplane that he owned with the late Dr. M. E. Woody, DDS, a Gastonia dentist. While on the planning committee for the current Gaston Memorial Hospital, Dr. Gregory flew groups throughout the state of North Carolina to examine other facilities and make decisions about the "new" hospital. When the hospital was completed, he proudly welcomed patients who were being moved from the old facility to the new one.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Carter Gregory, brother, Lemuel L. Gregory, Jr., and sister, Dorothy Gregory Chandler. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Doris Carter Wallace of Gastonia, niece, Sha W. Tate of Charlotte, and nephew, Dan C. Wallace of Cramer-ton, other nieces and nephews, and cousins, Glenn Dewey "Judge" Reynolds of Pinewood, SC and Anne Reynolds Stewart of Kline, SC.
There will be a visitation at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia on Thursday, June 21 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Graveside services for Dr. Gregory will be held at the Reynolds Family Cemetery, Pinewood, SC, on Friday June 22 at 1:00pm.
