William Pitner Jr.

SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - William Cleghorn Pitner, Jr., 71, of St. Simons Island, GA, died Monday, November 30, 2009, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church , St. Simons Island, with The Rt. Rev. Henry I. Louttit, celebrant, assisted by The Rev. Tony Powell, vicar, The Rev. Dee Shaffer, preacher, and The Rev. Chad Chaffee, deacon. Inurn-ment will follow at a later date in the columbarium at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church. Pat McLamara, Jim Hagarty, Bill Halcomb, Aubert Meredith, Ray Dumas, Edward S. Turner, and Vickie Alday will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Born October 12, 1938, in Chattanooga, TN, to the late William Cleghorn Pitner, Sr. and Edna Susan Gray, Father Bill was a retired Episcopal Priest. He attended Baylor
Military School in Chattanooga, TN, was a graduate of the niversity of the South at Sewanee, TN, University of Georgia at Athens, GA, and Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA. He has served parishes in Valdosta and Hinesville, GA. Most recently he has mentored candi-dates for the priesthood at Holy Nativity, St. Simons and Our Savior, Waverly, GA. He enjoyed model railroading, civil war history, woodworking and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Phyllis W. Pitner of St. Simons Island, a sister, Maria Gray Pitner of Tallahassee, FL, a nephew, Matthew Robert Gray Pitner of Atlanta and his beloved chocolate Lab companions, Samson and Ryder Pitner.

A luncheon will be be served in the parish hall following the service at Holy Nativity. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida, 401 East Hillsborough Blvd., Deerfield, FL 33441.
