GASTONIA - Theron King "T.K." Briley, 68, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at Gaston Memorial Hospital with family by his side.
He was born April 26, 1943, in Wadesboro. He was the son of the late King Theron Briley and Eloise Medlin Briley.
He grew up in Polkton and graduated from Anson High School, attended N.C. State University and studied mechanical engineering. He worked as plant maintenance engineer at Burlington Industries in Cheraw, S.C., for three years, then became co-owner of Greenline Equipment Co. in Orangeburg, S.C., for two and a half years, worked as textile plant engineer for Waverly Mills in Laurinburg, N.C., for four years. The next 35 years he was owner and president of Briley's Lawn and Leisure Inc., a John Deere commercial and grounds care equipment dealership in Gastonia.
T.K. was a member of the Carolinas Equipment Dealers Association, National Equipment Dealers Association, honorary member of GAMTRA, Gaston Agriculture Mechanical Textile Restoration Association, and a John Deere Circle of Excellence Dealer for outstanding sales achievement of John Deere commercial and consumer products. He was a supporter of Relay for Life, Oasis Shriner's and Boy Scouts of America.
His favorite pastimes were design, engineering and restoration of tractors and gardening. Most of all he enjoyed time with his family and his two favorite dogs, Coco and Cookie.
T.K. was a former member of Brown Creek Baptist Church in Wadesboro, N.C. and is a current member of Parkwood Baptist Church in Gastonia, N.C.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty Tarlton Briley; his two sons, Todd and Kevin Briley, both of Gastonia; brother, Robert F. Briley of Polkton, N.C.; sister, Carolyn King and husband Robert of Cummings, Ga.; nephews, Darrell King of Cummings, Ga.; Michael King and wife Caroline of Marietta, Ga.; great-nephews, Justin and Dylan King of Marietta, Ga.
Funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Parkwood Baptist Church in Gastonia, with Pastor Jeff Long and Pastor David Belle Isles officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.
Interment will be at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday in Lakeland Memorial Park, Monroe.
