BELMONT - Leonard Edward Alexander, 85, passed away Jan. 7, 2013, at Courtland Terrace.

Leonard was a native of Kannapolis, son of the late Clarence Edward and Ethel Poteat Alexander.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Vaughn Alexander and sister, Coleen Furchess.

Leonard was retired from the US Postal Service, Charlotte. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving on the USS Siboney in the Korean War. He was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church. Leonard was a passionate UNC Tar Heel fan, enjoyed gospel music, and loved the outdoors, especially his time on the South Fork River.

Survivors include his daughter, Janice Bigger and husband Michael; stepson, James Dalrymple and wife Wanda; brothers, Bobby
Alexander and wife Lib of Wilmington, Troy Alexander of Albemarle; sister, Helen Blackwelder of Charlotte; grandchildren, Ashley Janette Bigger, Shannon Long and husband Garry and great-grandchildren, Alex and Andrew Prachar.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Gaston Memorial Park.
