GASTONIA - James M. "Jim" Avey, 83, went to be with his Lord on Feb. 28, 2014, at his home.

He was born Aug. 25, 1930, in Dayton, Ohio.
Mr. Avey taught school for over 35 years in Gaston County where hundreds of his students and colleagues and countless others came to know him and love him dearly. He co-founded and briefly supply-pastored Carson Memorial Baptist Church, Crowder's Mountain, NC. He was a founding member and longtime music director of Trinity Baptist Church, Gaffney, SC, where he had served faithfully in many capacities since 1981.
A funeral service will be held noon Saturday at Greene Funeral Service, West Chapel, 216 Archie Whitesides Road, Gastonia, officiated by the Rev. Chris Wilson and Dr. Ray St. John.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with interment following the funeral at Westview Gardens, Besse-mer City.
Mr. Avey is survived by a nephew, Bill Avey, and his wife, Crystal; great-nieces Caitlin and Suzy Avey; and a sister-in-law, Sue
Avey, all of Mon-tana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Jennie (Marshall) Avey, and brother, Wally Avey.
