Evangelist Hazel Abbott Brewton Smith, 83, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at White Oak Manor Nursing Home in Kings Mountain. She was born on March 18, 1931 in Bostic and was the daughter of the late Rev. James Monroe and Lizzie Thompson Abbott.

Evangelist Smith was a member of St. Paul F.B.H. Church of Lawndale and later joined Full Gospel Holiness Church in Shelby. She was the matriarch of her family and a mother figure to many.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Arthur Ernest Brewton and John Henry Smith; one son, Earnest Brewton; five brothers, Addie W. Abbott, Roosevelt Abbott, Walter A. Abbott, Charles L. Abbott and William Abbott; three sisters, Leandus Abbott, Hattie A. Petty and Beatrice A. Wilson; two brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.

Left to cherish her memories, daughter, Dennie B. Hartgrove (Randolph) of Shelby; three sons, Demorris L. Brewton of Wilmington, Lawrence L. Brewton, her caregiver for over 20 years of Kings Mountain, and Robert L. Brewton (Tracy) of Gastonia; her siblings, Dr. Robert D. Abbott (Eva) of Shelby, and Dr. Betty A. Alexander of Aliquippa, Pa.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers-in-law, Charles H. Brewton of Patterson, N.J., Johnnie B. Brewton (Betty) of Kingstown, Rev. Raymond Brewton (Priscilla) of Lawndale, and Willie M. Brewton (Loretta) of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Hester Mae Smith of Shelby; two step-sons, Larry Smith of Shelby and Hogar Smith of Shelby; a step-daughter, Fairy Borders of Shelby; special friends, Eddie and Mona Henson and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Jerusalem C.F. Church of God with Bishop Thomas L. McCluney officiating and the Rev. Alfred Mullins delivering the eulogy. Burial will take place at Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the church and at other times at 331 Holmes St. in Shelby.
