GASTONIA - James E. Cashatt, 95, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 23, 2014.
Born in Randolph County, he was the son of the late James M. Cashatt and Lou Etta Pierce Cashatt. He was the oldest of 11 children and three sisters are still living.
He graduated from High Pont College in 1941, which he attended on a baseball and football scholarship. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. As a first lieutenant in the 4th Marine Division, Mr. Cashatt saw action in Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star during his service. His active duty ended in 1945 and he remained in the Reserves until 1958 when he received his honorable discharge with the rank of major.
In 1946, Mr. Cashatt joined Jefferson Standard and eventually rose to Regional Manager. He retired in 1972. He remained active playing golf, entertaining grandchildren and driving and caring for his 1960 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88.
Mr. Cashatt is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 41 years, Bobbie Chambers Cashatt; two daugh-ters, Becky Champion and JoAnn Biggs (Paul); and son, John Cashatt (Mary Gwynne Blair).
Mr. Cashatt has been a member of First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia for over 60 years and as a younger member served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
The family gives a special thank-you to Gaston Hospice and Pauline Zimmerman for her care and instruc-tions.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. A memorial service will be at noon and a graveside service will follow at Gaston Memorial Park. Dr. John Frye and the Rev. John Stanley of First Presbyterian Church will conduct the services.
