GASTONIA - Rachel Bridges Carpenter, 89, passed away June 26, 2014, at Alexandria Place.

She was born Oct. 11, 1924, to the late Ira Paul and Beulah Roberts Bridges.

Her grandparents were George William and Martha Ware Bridges of Kings Mountain and Anderson Perry and Georgianna Baker Roberts of Gastonia.

A lifelong resident of Gastonia, Rachel graduated from Gastonia High School with the Class of 1941. She worked at Threads, Inc. for many years and co-founded PORTA-JON in 1969.

Rachel formed her relationship with Christ at a very early age and was a life-long member of Myrtle United Methodist Church. She was very involved with her church family including singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School and working with the youth. In her later years she sang with the Golden Chorus at many senior care facilities.

Rachel was preceded in death by a son Keith Edward Carpenter of High Point, NC and brother Paul Roberts Bridges. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Sharyn Witcher Carpenter of High Point, NC; son, Ned Paul Carpenter and wife Juta of York, SC; grandchildren, Eric Reese Carpenter of High Point; Jill Carpenter Palmer and husband David of Argyle, TX; Pamela Carpenter Russell and husband Kevin of Lake Wylie, SC; William D. Robinson, III; Scott Robinson and wife Wendy; and Leigh Anne Robinson, all of Gastonia; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Kate Carpenter; Will, Reid, and Adair Palmer; Sara and Caleb Russell; Lydia Robinson; Payton Taylor, Colby, Mary Scott, and Lillian Robinson; Ethan and Taylor Roberts.

The family gratefully thanks the staff at Alexandria Place for their loving care and support. And, while many people supported Rachel at Alexandria Place, a special thank you to Jennie Barrett, Sara Ball, and Courtney Cook.

A celebration of Rachel's life will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Myrtle United Methodist Church with Pas-tor Kimberly S. Higgins officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

Interment will follow the service at Gaston Memorial Park.
