BELMONT - Howard "Lee" Ellis Long, 94, passed away peacefully on Aug. 11, 2014, at Kings Mountain Hospice House.

A native of Gastonia, he was the son of the late John William and Margaret Foster Long.
He was a member of East Belmont Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon. Lee was the plant operator with the City of Belmont Water Plant. He played baseball for the Belmont Combers as first baseman and pitcher, often called "Smokin'" Joe Long.
He was a US Army Veteran, an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling with his family.
A service to celebrate his life will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at East Belmont Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ray Kruntorad officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with military rites by the Gaston County Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church.
Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Margaret Parnell Long; daughter and son in law, Dianne and Dan Stinson of Belmont; brother and sister in law, Roger and Pat Long of Gastonia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Broadus "Jake" Long and John William "Dub" Long Jr.; sister, Annie Mae Long Thompson.
