GASTONIA - Jasper Cleveland Costner, 97, passed away peacefully onSept. 1, 2014, at the Robin Johnson House.

He was born in Gaston County on Dec. 6, 1916, to the late John Cleveland and Lula Mae Hawkins Costner.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

Mr. Costner was a member of First Baptist Church, Gastonia. He retired from Newport News Shipyard in Virginia and enjoyed fishing. He also had been a member of First Baptist Church Suffolk, VA and served as Deacon and was a member of senior citizens choir.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Myrtle Barlow Costner; his children, Jim Costner and wife Ann, Michael Costner and wife Frieda, and Bruce Costner; grandchildren, Sandra Larson, Matthew, Jason, Madison and Drew Costner; four great-grandchildren, Jonam, Sierra, Zachary and Collin

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. Friday at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home with a graveside service to be 3 p.m. Friday at Burke Memorial Park, 2506 Burke Memorial Park Rd, Morganton.
