GASTONIA - Charles "Chuck" V. Cannon, 61, died Dec. 6, 2011, at the Robin Johnson Hospice House.

He was born in Gaston County, son of Juanita Tate Cannon and the late Lee Von Cannon.

Chuck was a graduate of Hunter Huss High School and UNC Charlotte. He retired from the Gaston County Health Department as an Environmental Health Specialist. He later worked part time with the Cleveland County Health Department. He was of the Baptist faith. Chuck enjoyed volunteering at Courtland Terrace where he enjoyed gardening and sharing his bounty with the residents. He was well known for his home grown tomatoes and mak-ing tomato sandwiches for the residents at Courtland. Chuck was also known for his generosity and gave candy to everyone he came in contact with, many people called him the "candyman."

In addition to his mother, he is also survived by his sister Sharon Newton of Gastonia; brother and sister-in-law, John and Judy Cannon of Gastonia; nieces, Anne Marie Taylor, Susan Fargher and Jennifer Fallin all of Gastonia; nephews, Jeff and Jason Newton of Simpsonville, SC; lifelong friends, Sarah Newton, Steve McNabb, Donald Ipock of Gastonia; former sister-in-law, Bonnie Cannon of Gastonia.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Bill Newton, and his lifelong friend Robert Burnette.

A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Gaston Memorial Park with Chaplain Dave Herbertson officiating.

Chuck requested no flowers, instead his wish was for memorial contributions to be made to Gaston Hospice, P O Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054, or Loray Baptist Church, 1128 W. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia, NC 28052 or to the .

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Todd Hansen, Dr. Michael Case and the staff at Robin Johnson House for their loving care to Chuck during his illness.
