BELMONT - Carl M. Thackston III, 64, passed away Dec. 11, 2011, at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte after a coura-geous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born March 12, 1947, in Greenville, SC; he was the son of the late Carl M. Thackston, Jr. and Elizabeth Waldrop Thackston.

Carl served a 4 year tour with the United States Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller during the Vietnam War.

Carl graduated from West Valley Community College in San Jose, CA and later he obtained a BA in Social Work from UNCC. Carl was a medical social worker for Gaston Memorial Hospital for 30 years. He retired from Gaston County Family Health Services as the HIV/AIDS case manager. He was a co-founder of the Metrolina AIDS Project (MAP) where he was the first vol-unteer group support therapist for HIV clients and later a pivotal board member of the Gaston County AIDS Council.

Carl was an avid gardener and an exceptional cook. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. A caring and com-passionate man that will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years Judith Moore Thackston. In addition to his wife, Judith; Carl is survived by his son: Ryan Patrick Thackston of Belmont; brothers, Leonard "Lenny" Thackston and wife, Maria of Waterford, New Jersey; Mi-chael David Thackston and wife, Carolyn of Roanoke, VA; mother-in-law, Jennie Moore of Spruce Pine; sisters-in-law, Linda Woody of Spruce Pine, Valerie Blevins and husband, Dale of Spruce Pine; brothers-in-law, Gary Moore and wife, Audrey of Spruce Pine, Travis Moore and wife, Regina of Spruce Pine; niece, Elizabeth Thackston; nephews, Brett Thackston, Buddy and Chris Johnson; and many other loved nieces and nephews; special friends, Jerre Garnett of Wilmington, and Pam Poteat of Gas-tonia.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McLean Funeral Directors of Belmont.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church with Father Frank Cancro as Celebrant.
