GASTONIA - John Elonzo Fletcher Jr., 97, passed away peacefully Friday, October 26, 2012.

Born in Gaston County, he was the son of the late John Elonzo Fletcher Sr. and Ida Shepherd Fletcher. Mr. Fletcher was a retired shop supervisor with Firestone Mill where he was employed for 42 years. John was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church, a Mason and a Shriner with Oasis Temple.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Fletcher was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Austin Fletcher; second wife, Rosie Caldwell Fletcher; brothers, E.M., Paul, Arthur, Earl and Norman; sister, Ophelia Givins; and a stepdaughter, Peggy Rose Wellman.

Mr. Fletcher is survived by a daughter-in-law, Betty Austin; stepdaughter, Jane Johnson and husband, Joe; sister, Margaret Oakley; and numerous stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral service beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29 in the Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. Dr. M.O. Owens, the Rev. David Belle Isle and Pastor Vernon Carver will officiate.

Burial will follow at Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28 at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.
