GASTONIA - Gertrude V. (Long) Thompson, 89, passed away peacefully on Nov. 11, 2012, after an extended illness at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Richard Waits in Gastonia.

Born in Morgan County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Wilburn and Lillie (Leach) Long.
A former resident of Germantown, Ohio, Gertrude was a lifelong member of the Church of God in Germantown. She was one of the
founding mem-bers and served on the board of directors of the Society for Handicapped Citizens in Carlisle, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Thompson; sisters, Eula Michael and Ethel Spencer.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by her six children and their spouses, Frances Thompson, Kenneth and Janice Thompson, Mark and Christine Thomp-son, Judith and Dusty Wilcutt, Doris and Richard Waits, and Kevin and Jacqui Thompson; seven devoted grandchildren and their spouses, Brian Thompson, Michael Thompson, Jennifer Thompson, Eric Thompson, Adam and Melissa Wilcutt, Kyle and Elizabeth Waits, and Ryan and Courtney Waits; four great-grandchildren, Luke Wilcutt, Lillie Wilcutt, Johnathan Waits and Alayna Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held noon Friday in the chapel of Dalton Funeral Home in Germantown, Ohio.

Burial will be in the Germantown Cemetery.

As Gertrude was always an advocate for people with developmental disabilities, donations to the Society for Handicapped Citizens, 624 Fairview Drive, Carlisle, OH 45005, may be made in her memory.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Runa Tolbert and Callie Horne of Gaston Hospice, Renee Fuller of the Life Enrichment Center in Kings Mountain for their assistance in Gertrude's care. Also grateful appreciation to our friends at the Cardiac Cath Lab at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Sharon Carter, Bridgit Norris and Daphne Karem for their kindness and support.
