GASTONIA - Ray Horace Smith, 86 years old, passed away peacefully on Dec. 27, 2012, at Lincoln Nursing Center in Lincolnton.

Born on Dec. 12, 1926, he was the son of the late Ralph and Vinnie Short Smith.
He was a Navy Veteran and a former mail carrier. His desire to serve others led him to a career in law enforcement where he earned the rank as Chief of Detectives for the Gastonia Police Department. He owned Ray Smith Real Estate and Bail Bonding Company.
Ray was first and foremost a loving husband and father, devoted to his family.
In addition to his parents, Ray is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Ailene Powell Smith, a precious granddaughter, Denise Blalock Brooks and six brothers and two sisters.
A service of remembrance will be held 3 p.m. Monday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia Founders Chapel with the Rev. Carl Overton officiat-ing.
Interment will follow in Gaston Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
Ray is survived by his two daughters, Vicky B. King of Gastonia; Linda Y. Cloniger and husband, Malcolm of Shelby; grandchildren: Kathy Blalock Bur-nett of Gastonia, Lisa R. Whitener and husband Dennis of Hickory, Chris Blalock of Gastonia, Abbie Michael and husband, Mark of Kings Mountain; great-grandchildren: Tyler Dennis, Ethan Brooks, Jordan Moore, Sarah Blalock and Justin Cook.
