GASTONIA - Ralph Kirby Chitwood, 74, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Durham.

He was born Nov. 5, 1938, in Bristol, Tenn., the son of the late Dillard Parks and Ella Verda Starrett Chitwood.

Mr. Chitwood was raised in Georgia, South Carolina and Gaston County. He was the former owner of Chitwood Electrical Contractors and CSC Construction Co., Inc. He was a member of Gastonia Masonic Lodge No. 369, the Scottish Rite and York Rite Bodies and Oasis Temple Shrine. Mr. Chitwood served our country in the U.S. Marines.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Chitwood was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, Glenn and Robert Chitwood; five sisters, Geraldine C. Chatham, Mildred C. Oxendine, Audrey Jean Moore, Sara C. Gossett and Roxie C. Howell.

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Kay Cavney Chitwood; daughters, Dede C. Rose and husband, Brian, of Belmont, and Melanie C. King and husband, Cory, of McAdenville; son, Ralph Kirby Chitwood II, of Gastonia; grandchildren, Suzanne D. Rose, Austin D. Rose, Kasen Pierce Chitwood and Jillian Presley Chitwood; sister, Delma C. Watanabe of Riverside, Calif.; brother, Kenneth D. Chitwood of Simi Valley, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation from noon to 1:45 p.m. Monday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. in Founders Chapel. Pastor John Stanley will officiate. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow at Gaston Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, North Carolina Chapter, 4530 Park Road, Suite 240, Charlotte, NC 28209.
