GASTONIA - Ellen Gray Snider, 87, died Jan. 24, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Ellen was a native of Florence, Ala., daughter of the late Duncan Simpson Gray Sr. and Grace Phillips Gray.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the First ARP Church in Gastonia with the Revs. Eddie Spencer and Matt Kuiken officiating.

The family will receive friends in the church chapel immediately following the service.

Interment will be private.

Mrs. Snider was a former resident of Charlotte and retired from the Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board with over 23 years of service. She was a former member of Westover Hill Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and still actively involved with "Westover Leftovers" on a regular basis. Ellen is presently a faithful member of the First ARP Church in Gastonia. She served on various committees and was very active in numerous church functions; she loved the church with all of her heart.
Ellen was also a former volunteer for the Nursing Home Advisory Committee.

Survivors include her daughter, Caroline Taylor and husband Kyle of Gastonia, son, James R. Snider and wife Sheri of Raleigh, grandchildren, William J. Snider of Raleigh and James K. Taylor of Gastonia, sisters, Jane G. Mackey of Florence, Alabama and Anne G. Jones of Huntsville, Ala-bama, brothers, Duncan S. Gray, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia, and T. Edward Gray of Chicago Illinois, numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved pets Smokey and Georgia.

In addition to her parents Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, J. Roy Snider and sisters, Grace G. Killian and Elizabeth G. Bowser.
