GASTONIA - Ambrose "Abe" Rhyne Stroupe, 91, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2013, at Robin Johnson House.

A native of Gaston County, he was a son of the late Ambrose and Joanna Wofford Stroupe.

He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Lorene Hurst Stroupe; son, Terry S. Stroupe; seven sisters and three brothers.

Abe was a veteran of the U.S. Army and member of WWII Last Man Club of Gaston County. He was a long-time and active member of First Baptist Church, Cramerton where he served as deacon, usher and Sunday school teacher. Abe loved the game of baseball. He played while in the army and with the textile leagues in Gaston County. He coached both baseball and football for many years. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan.

He is survived by his children; Kathy Stroupe Cook and husband Robert of Statesville, Blair Rhyne Stroupe and wife Maria of Dallas; special friend and companion; Frances Bost; daughter in law, Micki Craft Stroupe; grandchildren, Sherron Cook Rickabaugh and husband Greg, Jennifer Cook Riney and husband William, Brian S. Stroupe and wife Nicole, Matthew R. Stroupe and wife Anne, Kristin T. Stroupe, Rhyne A. Stroupe; great grandchildren, Mallorie, Leelan, Thomas, Norah, Stephen and Paetyn.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at McLean Funeral Directors, Gastonia.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Cramerton with Dr. David Julen officiating.

Burial with honors by the Gaston County Honor Guard will be in Gaston Memorial Park.
