GASTONIA - Howard Coley, 93, passed away peacefully at Alexandria Place on June 10, 2013.

For several years before that he resided at Morningside of Gastonia where he felt at home due in large part to the kindness of the caregivers there.

Mr. Coley was born on April 22, 1920, in Stanly County, the son of George W. and Melia Dupree Coley. He was predeceased in June, 2009, by his beloved wife of 68 years, Irene McDonald Coley. He was also predeceased by two brothers and two sisters. Mr. Coley is survived by his daughter Elaine Waddell and husband Kenneth of Pawleys Island, SC and his son H. Michael Coley and wife Lisa of Clover, SC. He is also survived by grandchildren Lynn Melton of Gastonia; Ashley E. Bell of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Houston L. Bell, III of Myrtle Beach, SC; Brian Coley, U.S. Navy; Jason Coley and Richard Hambrick of Clover, SC. Also surviving are three great grandchildren, Alexis Lewis, Gastonia; Pope Kennedy and Wren Ken-nedy, Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Mr. Coley served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII and afterwards spent many years working in the textile industry in the Gastonia area. He finished his career as a welder retiring at age 82. He enjoyed a variety of hobbies throughout his life including growing orchids, water lilies and koi fish. He also enjoyed working in the yard and constructing various tools and gadgets using his welding and mechanical skills. He most enjoyed his time with his wife Irene and his family especially his grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at McLean Funeral Home at 700 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Gaston Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers the family would very much appreciate a donation to the in Mr. Coley's memory.
