GASTONIA -- Stella West Buchanan, 87, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013. She was born in Rio Grande, Texas, daughter of the late Eugene and Sofia Guerra West. During WWII, she worked as a translator for the International Telephone and Telegraph Service.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and George West. Mrs. Buchanan is survived by her husband, John L. Buchanan I; a daughter, Liz Ashurst and husband Paul of Mount Holly; one son, John L. Buchanan II and wife Barbi of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Alma Young and Edna Rives, both of Texas; and five grandchildren, Virgina Stella Ashurst, John Richard Ashurst, and Jessie Wayland Ashurst all of Mount Holly, Bryn Vaaler Buchanan and John Vaaler Buchanan both of Phoenix, Az.
A graveside service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Buchanan will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at Evergreen Cemetery in Belmont with Rev. Mitch Murrow officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 375 Woodlawn Avenue, Mount Holly, NC 28120.
