GASTONIA - James Claudius "J.C." Barber Jr. died peacefully on Jan. 14, 2014, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.

Born Dec. 26, 1924, on his family's farm near Barber Junction, he was a son of the late J. Claude and Laura E. Barber.
J.C. was a graduate of Cleveland High School, Cleveland, NC and NC State University (Class of '49). He was a member of the US Navy during WWII, serving on the LST 704 in the South Pacific. He started his working career in Gaston County in 1951 as a 4-H Club Leader, and continued as an Agent in the NC Agricultural Extension Service, working in Gaston and Cleveland counties until his retirement in 1979.

Mr. Barber was a loyal member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Gastonia, where he served on the Vestry, was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, and sang in the choir for over 30 years.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Barber was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Ovida J. (Vi) Barber, sister, Eleanor B. Davis, and brothers, Karl E. Barber and Walter B. Barber.

He is survived by his son, Jim Barber of Gastonia, sisters, Alice E. Bennet of Salisbury, and Dorothy E. Ellis of Cleveland, and sister-in-law, Bette K. Barber of Salisbury.

For the last 8 years of his life, Mr. Barber and his family were challenged by his slow decent into Alzheimer's Disease. Helping him and his fam-ily along that journey were caregivers, together with fellow residents and their family members at Carillon Assisted Living and at Courtland Ter-race-many doing the Lord's work-for which we will always be grateful.

A service to celebrate J.C.'s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Gastonia, NC, with Father Shawn Griffith officiating.

A reception will immediately follow the service in the church Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 258 W. Franklin Blvd, Gastonia, NC. or the 3800 Shamrock Dr. Charlotte, NC 28215.
