David Swearingen Obituary

David R. Swearingen. 81., died unexpectedly Feb. 23, 2017 at his home in Carlsbad, Calif.,where he lived since 2004. He was the son of Ruby and David E. Swearingen of Topeka, Kan., and lived much of his life in Colorado Springs, Colo.



He attended the University of New Mexico where he met and married Stephanie Carol Bazley. She is now deceased as is their son, Karl. They also had a daughter Valerie. In 1972, Mr. Swearingen married Marilyn More, an administrator with the Widefield School District.

Throughout his life, Mr. Swearingen enjoyed a variety of careers and interests. He was a funeral director with Law Mortuary. He was a manager of the Cross Boutique at the Broadmoor Hotel as well as J.C.Penney. He was also an oil surveyor in Surinam. Among his special interests while in Colorado Springs were the Elks Club, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Numismatic Society and The Henderson Supper Club, as well as the Sons of the American Revolution. He was also a Civil War reenactor. He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Encinitas, Calif., and a former member of First Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs where he will be placed privately in the chapel's columbarium.

Along with his wife Marilyn, Mr. Swearingen is survived by his daughter, Valerie Layton of Cordele, Georgia. Other family members include a niece and nephew and their spouses.
