Evelyn Hassel Obituary

Evelyn A. "Sally" Hassel, wife, mother, grandmother, WWII veteran, teacher in a one-room school, passed away November 4, 2012. Sally was born June 7, 1916 on her parents farm in Merrill, Wisconsin, the second of six children. Evelyn graduated from Merrill High in 1933 then completed one year of teacher's college and taught for 8 years. During WWII, she enlisted in the Army Air Corps. She met her husband, Charles Hassel, after the war when they both worked in the Pentagon. The Air Force moved them to various bases. Her only son, Michael, was born in Texas. In 1963 they bought a house in Colorado Springs where they returned when Chuck retired. Her husband died in 1983. She survived a stroke in 1995, and moved to Westminster. In 2001 she moved to Longmont. She passed away peacefully in the Longmont Hospital after a brief illness. She loved reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards, gambling, bingo, playing pool and visits from her family. She was 96 but could still beat most people at Jeopardy. She quoted snippets of poetry and had a wry wit that many did not catch. Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Hassel, her parents, Joe and Ruby Kislinger, her sisters Marion Oldenburg, Irene Zimmerman, and Shirley Chilsen. She was survived by her son Michael Hassel, daughter in law Donna Ward and granddaughters Okasana and Vika all of Longmont Co, and siblings Geneva Delene, of Tennessee and Donald Kislinger and his wife Freida living in Mexico. Services will be held at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel 3:00 PM Saturday, Nov. 10. Private internment Monday at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
