Bert Jay Garvin 45, passed away on Thursday March 6, 2014 in Yakima, Wa.
Bert was born on December 2nd, 1968 in Witchita Kansas to parents Sylvia Kurtz and Dave Rumley. While traveling with his mother who was an active duty nurse for the United States Army
and adopted father William Garvin, they finally resided in Security Colorado where he graduated from Palmer High School.
He joined the Army in 1991 at the age of 23. During his military career he has traveled to Thailand, Kuwait Hawaii and numerous deployments to Afghanistan. He was a very accomplished soldier holding numerous good conduct medals, ribbons and badges to list a few: He holds the Bronze star
medal, national defense service medal with bronze service star, army accommodation medal, combat action badge and sharp shooter badge. He also held numerous certifications and special training in truck driving & mechanics school, air assault training, secretarial school and certification as an EMT. At the time of his death he was an active duty Master Sargent for the United States Army Reserves. Throughout his life he expressed a great passion for music, although he enjoyed listening to all types of music his favorite was Rock & Roll.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory fiance' Alonza Kelly and unborn daughter. Two daughters; Rebecca Carey of (Ut), Charisma Nazworthy of (Ia), and son Matt Garvin of (Ut), a sister Carolyn Garvin of (Co) and brother Cary David Rumley of (Az) aunts, uncles and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Roy Kurtz and Carolyn Lohkamp. His funeral service will be held at Smith Mortuary 1415 N. Rock Road in Derby Kansas on Tuesday March 18th at 10:00 am.
