Byron Akers

Byron, 82, went home to be with the Lord on June 16th, 2012. Born to Byron and Lois Akers in Colorado Springs, May 4, 1930. He attended Colorado University, Boulder, where he received his BS and his Juris Doctorate in Law. He met and married his sweetheart Laverne, in 1956, and together they celebrated 56 years of marriage. Byron began his career as an assistant District Attorney in El Paso, Elbert, and Douglas counties. He became a partner of Haney, Howbert and Akers. His law career spanned more than 40 years, and he earned a highly regarded reputation as a smart, caring and devoted professional. Byron retired from the practice of law, but remained Of-Counsel with Holland and Hart for many years. Byron's life was one of service. He was an active member and servant of First Presbyterian Church his entire life. He served in many other Christian and civic organizations. When he was not focusing his energy on his practice, family and friends, Byron was an avid and talented golfer. He practiced the game of golf at a very early age, living blocks from Patty Jewett golf course. He reached the pinnacle of the sport by winning the Phoenix Open pro-am tournament. However, beyond any profession or hobby, Byron was a caring man of character and integrity. He was a generous and involved friend, a devoted husband and father, and a man whose intelligence and graciousness blessed all who knew him. Byron is survived by his beloved wife, LaVerne, his daughters; Debra Gager (Ray), Cindi Kyte (Rick), and Kathy Harris (Dave, a devoted friend and confidant). He is also survived by his brother Dr. John Akers, (Anne), and his cherished grandchildren Sarah, Leah, Ian and Evan and more family and friends than one could possibly count. Byron was the epitome of a gentleman, a friend and a servant to God. His family is grateful for all of those who have loved and supported him through the last several years and are especially grateful for the loving care given to him by the pastoral care of First Presbyterian Church, the staff of Brookdale Place and Odyssey hospice. A service of gratitude for the life of Byron will be held Friday, June 22nd at 11:00 at First Presbyterian Church.
