Funeral services for Carroll L. Brannen, 99, of Florence, will be on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at the Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City. Family will receive friends on Sunday from 1 to 2pm at the Abbey Chapel. Memorial Service will be at 2pm and a Celebration of Life will follow at the Event Center at the Abbey. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery on Monday, May 6 in Colorado Springs. Carroll died on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 with his son William at his side. He was born on July 22, 1913, at home in Mildred, Kansas, the son of William Marion Brannen and Iva Leona Vandeveer, and stepson of Ernest F. Gust. He married Sharon (Powers) in 1972. Carroll worked since the age of 13 and earned a "mans wage" at this young age. He owned the White Eagle Market in downtown Colorado Springs. In 1978, he moved to Florence, Colorado where he managed the ARK Thrift Store. Carroll spent his life in service of others and was a friend to everyone. He was a volunteer at Sangre DeCristo Hospice for 17 years and always looked after the well being of his neighbors. He enjoyed wood working, going to auctions and was known for his beautiful yard and flourishing garden. He was blessed to still be living comfortably in his own home. He is survived by his sons William Brannen and wife Lisa of Florence, Carroll Patrick Brannen of Loveland and Jim Brannen and wife Phyllis of Nevada. His daughters Joan Frederick of Colorado Springs, Lavonne Causey and husband Wade of Colorado Spring, and Tammy Brannen-Smith and husband David of Loveland. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Sharon Ann Brannen, his parents, his step-father, his son Larry Brannen, brothers Russell and August Brannen, Joseph Shepherd and infant twin brother. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sangre DeCristo Hospice in Canon City. Carroll would want people to live by his example and volunteer, give your time to a cause you care about or extend a helping hand to those around you.
