Mary Jo Bothun lost her courageous battle with cancer on Monday, October 29, 2013.
She was born March 18, 1951 to Robert and Vera Erickson in Vermillion, South Dakota.
Mary spent several years in the U.S. Army
and traveled to Europe and the Pacific in addition to many states in the U.S. After her discharge from the Army in 1979, Mary worked for the Veterans Administration in Columbia, South Carolina. From there, she traveled to California where she worked at Fort Irwin, and back to Germany where she started her family. Following assignments to Indiana and Hawaii, Mary finally moved with her family to Colorado Springs in 1995.
Mary was a very intelligent, quiet lady who was the consummate pro at the art of cross stitch. She was also fond of word puzzles and extremely adept at Sudoku. Her attention to detail made for some very memorable, unparalleled Christmas trees and her ability to find bargains at any store was uncanny. She knew how to make a soldier's budget work in any economy.
Mary married Norman Bothun in Ostfildern, West Germany on January 14, 1977. She is survived and dearly loved by Norm and their three sons, Eric, Anders and John, all of Colorado Springs. Mary is also survived by her sisters Linda (Bob Iverson) of Vermillion, South Dakota, and Jane (Jeff Sturm) of Battleground, Washington, her brother Paul Erickson of St. Paul, Minnesota, her mother-in-law, Doris Bothun of Babbitt, Minnesota and two sisters-in-law, Lana Hietala of Ely, Minnesota and Lori Skoglund of Wyoming, Minnesota.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bruce.
The family would like to thank Rocky Mountain Cancer Center and its staff, Drs. Logsdon, Coons, Burns, and Thatcher for the kind and caring treatment of Mary during her illness.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00a.m., November 7, 2013 at Evergreen Funeral Home.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to: Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation, 2550 Tenderfoot Hill Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80906.
