Mira Workman Ballagh 99, born April 24, 1906 and passed away January 17, 2006. Born in North Tonawanda, NY. Preceded in death by parents Charles and Elizabeth (Kline) Workman. Mira attended Buffalo City schools and graduated from Arnold College for Hygiene and Physical Education in 1928 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She returned to teach elementary physical education in the Buffalo City schools for 13 years. During those years she was active in the Girl Scouts as a troop leader. On July 7, 1934 she married Robert S. Ballagh in Skaneatelas, NY. Bob preceded her in death in 1996 after 62 years of marriage. During WWII, Mira maintained the family farm in Hamburg, NY while Bob served in the South Pacific. After the war, Bob stayed on active duty in the U.S. Army for 20 years. Mira joyfully moved the family to the many places Bob was assigned, including four years in Colorado Springs from 1950 to 1954. Mira was again active in Girl Scouting and instrumental in starting the Senior Center through Parks & Recreation in Colorado Springs. She also volunteered with the Colorado Springs Humane Society. Bob and Mira rode with the El Paso County Hounds. Upon Bob's retirement from the military, they retired to Newburg, NY where Mira worked for seven years as an intake worker for the NY State Dept. of child welfare, earning a NY State retirement. Mira is survived by her children: Robert S. Ballagh Jr. (Ella) and Bonnie Ballagh Ritch. She has five grandchildren; Robert Seney Ballagh, III (Tracy), David M. Ballagh (Millie), William N. Ritch, III, Frederic A. Ritch (Renee) and Catherine E. Rice (Patrick); and six great grandchildren. During her long life Mira never stopped serving as a mentor and an inspiration to all those who had the privilege of knowing her. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Girl Scouts Wagon Wheel Council, 3535 Parkmoor Village Drive, Colorado Springs CO 80917. A Memorial Service will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 21, 2006 at Mountain View Mortuary, 2350 Montebello Square Drive, Colorado Springs. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, VA at a later date.
