Nellie Gayle Johnson, 87, of Colorado Springs, died peacefully at her home with family on June 16, 2013. She was born to Clarence and Gayle Ward Foster in 1925 at her Grandmother Ward's farmhouse east of Fountain. She attended Kitty Pastor School to 6th grade, then Fountain High where she graduated. She married Delmar A. Johnson in 1944. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delmar of 44 years; and brother, Ward Foster. She is survived by her daughter, Gloria & husband, Gary Giberson of Austin, TX; son, Daryl Johnson & wife, Terry of Pueblo; and son, David Johnson & wife, Connie (dcd) of Penrose; brothers: Robert Foster of Security, Jesse Foster of Fort Collins and Charles Foster of Colo Springs; grandchildren: Clint, Dennis & Shelley Giberson, Daryl Jr, Tracy, Andrea, Douglas & Daniel Johnson. She was a proud great-grandmother to 15 and 'Aunt Nellie' to 12 Foster and 8 Johnson nieces & nephews. Many other cousins, relatives and dear friends were woven into the fabric of her life. She was a homemaker who enjoyed baking, sewing, knitting, gardening, camping & fishing. An avid book reader and faithful sports fan of all Colorado teams, she also enjoyed Fountain reunions, dances, bowling, card clubs and neighbors. Her family took great lessons from her example of how to live a good life with gratitude and humor every day and for every loved one. After losing her own mother at age 22, she evolved into being a devoted and loving matriarch of the Foster, Ward & Johnson families, keeping in touch and sharing news with family far and wide. Her family thanks Dr. R.A. McConnaughy, her physician of many years, and Pikes Peak Hospice staff who provided assistance and care in her last weeks. Contributions in her memory may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice, 2550 Tenderfoot Hill St., CO Springs, CO 80906. Services to be held June 20 at 11am at the Chapel at Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 N Cascade, officiated by Chaplain Charles Foster and Pastor Edward Foster.
