Roxanne Inez Hammond was born on June 16, 1936, in Eunice, Louisiana, the daughter of Carl and Mary Margaret Ritter. She attended the University of Texas
where she met her husband of 55 years, George R. Hammond. She passed away peacefully on November 15, 2012 at Namaste in Colorado Springs. She is survived by her husband; daughters, Cynthia Barton of Lexington, South Carolina, and Karen Sugano and Melanie Adams of Colorado Springs; and eight grandchildren. Music was her passion. A self-taught pianist, she was also an accomplished organist. Her talents touched many lives. As the wife of an Air Force officer, she lived in many locations throughout Europe and the United States. She sang in and conducted choral choirs during her husband's assignments, and was the organist and choir director in many churches. She was also the accompanist for youth and adult choral choirs in several locations. Most notably, she accompanied the Navy Choristers of the United States Naval War College in Newport, RI. In 1982, she was introduced to handbells and organized and directed several handbell choirs. She was a member of the Pikes Peak Ringers of Colorado Springs. She was also a member of the American handbell choir that attended the International Handbell Festival in Gotemba, Japan. Known for her organizing skills, she was chairperson for the annual Southern Colorado Handbell Festival for many years. She was also the chairman of the six-state Area XI of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers from 1994 to 1996. Despite her many musical activities, she always had time to be a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She became known for her chocolate chip cookies, particularly among her grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 26, 2012, at the Chapel of Our Saviour, 8 Fourth Street, Colorado Springs. A reception will follow the service.
