James Burnside Obituary
James E. Burnside "Jim" was born March 19, 1932 to Everett James Burnside and Agnes M. Burnside in Tribune, KS. Jim grew up in Tribune, KS, Grant, NE, and Sedgwick and Julesburg, CO. He graduated from Sedgwick County High School in 1949. Jim remained in contact with members of his senior class. Jim spent four years in the US Navy where he learned his life trade as an electrician. He served from 1951–1954 and received the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, United Nations Medal, and the Korean Service Medal. He served on USS New Jersey. Jim had three children from a previous marriage: Brenda, Steve and Cindy. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Russel, his sister, Ellen, and daughters, Brenda and Cindy. Jim married Judy McAfee with her three children in 1972. Jim and Judy raised their children in Ellicott. Jim was a businessman and entrepreneur. He owned and operated Burnside Electric and Four Wheels East. Jim bought land in 1963 near Ellicott, CO and began a ranching career. He ranched until his death. Jim loved cattle and taught all his kids and grandkids the taste of a good hamburger. Jim raced off-road 4 wheel vehicles and served as a pit crew member in stockcar racing. Jim was devoted to every aspect of his life and belonged to many boards and organizations. He was on the Ellicott School Board from 1973-1981. Jim belonged to the Pikes Peak Cattlemen's Association and El Paso County Chapter NO. 23 of the Soil Conservation Society of America. Jim received an Award of Excellence as a distinguished citizen for his contribution to community affairs. Jim is survived by his wife, Judy, his son/daughter-in-law, Steve and Carol Burnside, his daughter/son-in-law, Tammy and Ross Campbell, his son/daughter-in-law Bill and Ronda McAfee, and his daughter/son-in law, Susan and Kevin Acre, grandchildren Derek and Chad Burnside, Kristin Piano, Kimberly and Ben Campbell, Shawn and Kenzie McAfee and Cody James Acre, and great grandsons Preston and Brock Burnside, nephew Kenny Burnside and niece Kathy Rhodes. Judy Burnside and family would like to thank the community and all churches and denominations that are praying for Jim and his family. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 22 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colo. Spgs, CO 80903. Services will be held at Austin Bluffs Community Church on Tuesday, December 23 at 10:00 a.m. at 5090 Austin Bluffs Pkwy, Colo. Spgs, CO 80918. Reception lunch immediately following the services. Please join us and feel free to bring a covered dish. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Special Olympics, 3595 E. Fountain Blvd., Colo. A half century has passed since I first had the privilege of meeting and getting acquainted with James E. "Jim" Burnside. It would have been while I was employeed at the auto parts store at 2631 E Hiway 24 (now E Platte Ave) in Colorado Springs. Jim was such a great guy, so much fun to be around, always laughing, cutting up, and us joking around at each others expense!!! I'd see him coming in the store and announce..."Hey, Fellas, here comes my buddy Jim "Sideburns"
What a total shock it was to first read the account of the accident that took the life of my Friend Jim, and then to view his obituary on-line. I extend my most profound deepest heartfelt sympathy to his wife Judy and all his children.

Well, I am a loss for words. They cannot describe what a good man Jim was. I feel like I had known this man all my life. He has always been very supportive and all that is Jim. The schools, the kids, the teachers, the sports. There was nothing that Jim touched that did not come out better. Judy, Steve, Tammy, Bill and Sam, I am so sorry for your loss. However, I am a true believer that Jim is doing good at what he can where ever he is. Or at least telling a good yarn about what he had done and been.

My favorite memory is when Uncle Jim taught my oldest daughter Shannah to go up to people and "get their nose," unfortunately she miss understood at the age of three, and nearly twisted my nose off.
