Allan Greist Obituary

Allan Clarkson Greist, 70, died quietly at his home on January 6, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judith, daughter Barbara Latrell, and grandson Jay Latrell, all of Colorado Springs. His son Michael preceded him in death in 1978. Other survivors are sister Polly Lanius, and brother Walter Greist, of North Haven, Connecticut, brother David Greist of Evergreen, Colorado and sister Peggy Grant of Grand Junction, Colorado. Allan grew up in North Haven, Connecticut, an Eagle Scout and a graduate of Yale University and moved to Colorado Springs in 1965 as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. After retirement, he worked in the computer field at Traffic Data Systems, Safetran, Digital Equipment Corporation and Skyline Products until he retired in 2004. He was an avid hunter of elk and deer, gardener, hiker, camper, sailor, irrepressible punster and long-time member of the Golden Circle Model Railroad Club. He loved to sing and was a member of the Colorado Springs Chorale for 37 years. Reading, computer games and jig-saw puzzles filled many hours. An informal gathering is planned at his residence in Colorado Springs on Sunday, January 16, 2011 from 2 to 5 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the Colorado Springs Chorale, PO Box 2304, Colorado Springs, 80901.

I remember Al from Digital Equipment Corporation and his garden stories. Although I never saw his garden, I could picture it clearly from his descriptions. Al said with a smile, " A weed is no longer a weed if cultivated." So true in many ways. What a nice guy. Tamara Jorstad (DC)

I too worked with Al during the 80's. Al would take me out on fossil hunting expeditions up Pinon Valley during lunches. He had quite an eye for finding fossils. As John pointed out Al was quite the story teller, and kept us all entertained with his amusing stories. He will be missed.

I worked with and for Al at Digital Equipment in the late 1980's. He had a sunny, positive personality which always served to keep the workplace enjoyable. Al also enjoyed telling of his sailing adventures and I enjoyed hearing those and other stories as he was a great storyteller.
