David Lewis Obituary

David Quigg Lewis III passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Monday, May 20, 2013. David was born Dec. 13, 1929 to David Quigg Lewis Jr. and Harriett Brown Lewis in Hinsdale, Ill. He attended schools in Hinsdale before entering Kimball Union Academy prep school in New Hampshire. Upon graduation in 1948 he traveled west to visit Colorado College on the advice of a friend and never left. David started pursuing a business administration degree from Colorado College and became a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. His college career was briefly interrupted for a stint in the Air Force but he returned to complete his degree, graduating in 1955. He married Patricia Tolley on Dec. 18, 1954 at Grace Episcopal Church. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage and raised three children, David, Alison and Elizabeth. David joined Tolley Insurance Agency, going into business with his father-in-law, Kenneth Tolley. David would go on to become the principal owner of Tolley-Weidman Insurance Agency overseeing expansions and buyouts through the years. He sold the business in 1984 to enjoy his retirement. David and Patty traveled the world but his favorite destination was the Caribbean Islands and together they visited nearly all of them. He had a love of gardening and enjoyed the canine companions that were part of the family through the years. He was a member of the Cheyenne Mountain Country Club and the El Paso Club. During his insurance career he held various local, regional and national board positions and earned a memorable trip to Wimbledon in 1977. David is survived by his wife, Patty, children, David Lewis IV, Alison Heintz (Mark), Elizabeth Cobb (Jerry), grandsons, Stuart Cobb, Spencer Heintz and Kelly Cobb, sister, Elizabeth Lewis Barritt (Lester) and brother-in-law Gerald Tolley (Cheryl). David was a kind and generous man and will be greatly missed by his family and many close friends. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Chapel of Our Savior, 4th Street and Polo Drive. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in David's honor may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care, 2550 Tenderfoot Hill St., Colorado Springs, CO 80906, or the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, 610 Abbot Lane, Colorado Springs, CO 80905.
