Elizabeth Sun Obituary

Elizabeth Torrey. Sun, better known to her family and friends as “Bettie, passed away on July 23, 2010. She was 89 yeas of age. Elizabeth Jane Torrey was born in Chicago on October 5, 1920, the only child of artists Mabel Landrum Torrey and Fred Martin Torrey. She was raised in Chicago, where she studied at the University of Chicago and the American Conservatory of Music. Bettie was preceded in death by her late husband, K.S. Sun, M.D. of Ames, Iowa, her daughter Wen-an Sun Pogzeba, her son-in-law Wolfgang Pogzeba, and her grandson Jason Emile Pogzeba, of Taos, New Mexico. She is survived by her son, W. Torrey Sun, and his wife Katherine L. King, of Altadena, California. Bettie was a devoted wife and mother, and she had many interests: she studied voice in graduate school; she was well traveled; she had a passion for photography; she delighted in building electronic components which came in kit form, including short-wave radio transmitters and receivers, television sets, and ultimately computers; and she was a card carrying member of MENSA. Throughout her life, Bettie was a very independent and self-sufficient individual. She had an adventurous, highly focused, and pioneering spirit, and she lived a full and active life. A private service is planned. The family has requested that donations to Colorado College in Bettie's memory be considered in lieu of flowers.
