Neil Spurgin Callbeck was born March 19, 1927, in Joliet, Illinois, to Hilda Spurgin and Frederick Colin Callbeck. He passed away, at the age of 87, on Monday August 11, 2014, at Village of Skyline Rehabilitation Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, surrounded by his family.
During the Second World War, Neil enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on a fleet ship in the Pacific. After honorable discharge from the Navy, he studied mechanical engineering at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. While in college, Neil served as the photographer for the university newspaper. Upon completion of his mechanical engineering degree, he worked as staff photographer for the Peoria Star newspaper for several years before putting his engineering training to use.
Neil worked in several different engineering areas during his career. The final twenty-five years he worked in the Program Office of Lockheed Missiles and Space Company in Sunnyvale, California, helping to develop the Polaris, Poseidon, and Trident missiles.
Neil is survived by Martha, his wife of fifty-six years; a son, Fred Callbeck, his wife, Sarah, and their daughter, Rebecca, of Colorado Springs; a son, Rob Callbeck, of San Francisco, California; a brother, Robert Callbeck, of Chicago, Illinois; a sister, Gaile Phillips, and her husband, Hiram Phillips, of Springfield, Illinois; and nieces Margaret Waverly, Sally Jones, and Katie Marinelli.
Neil was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, a Deacon, treasurer of Pathfinders, of which he was a member, and on the team that counted the offering each Monday morning. His compassion, generous nature, and sense of humor touched everyone he met. It was in his heart to share the blessings of his Lord with all those he met, even in his last days.
A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Colorado Springs, at 1:00 PM August 29, 2014. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Neil and I went to Springfield High School and Bradley University as school chums. One of three of us, Bob Dauner, passed away just a few years ago. As the last man standing in this group of close friends, I say "God be with you Neil".
