R. D. Moore Obituary

R. D. (Duane) Moore, of Fountain, CO passed away unexpectedly after a short illness Sunday, July 28th in Albuquerque, NM. He was 74 years old. Dr. Moore was born on December 1st, 1938 in Longmont, CO to Robert Earle and Laura Leona (Simmons) Moore. He grew up as the oldest of three children on the family farm east of Rinn, CO and graduated from Frederick, CO high school with the class of 1956. In 1957 he married Lorene Dufour. Shortly afterward he was accepted to vet school at Colorado State University after completing two years of undergraduate work as an engineering major. He received his DVM in 1963. In 1964 he moved his young family to Las Animas where he began a mixed practice as the only veterinarian in Bent County at that time. He continued in that practice for almost 20 years. In the early 1980's Doc relocated to Fountain, CO and began another successful practice, Southmoor Veterinary Clinic which he and his wife ran for almost 20 years. In the early 1970's Dr. Moore became active in the business of raising and racing quarter horses as well as building a racetrack veterinary practice. Race horse medicine became his lifelong passion. He practiced at racetracks from Minnesota to New Mexico, including the old Centennial Racetrack in Littleton and La Mesa Park in Raton. At the time of his death he held credentials to practice in eight states. He was a well-known and respected practitioner who was often consulted on difficult cases and called for expert testimony before various racing commissions. Dr. Moore was a past president of the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association, and a lifetime member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Equine Practitioners. He was also a lifetime member of the Elks. He leaves behind his wife Lorene of the family home; two children, Bob (Cyndi) of Segundo, CO and Mardi of New York City; also 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Bob in 1998. His mother, Leona passed away on July 29th only hours after Doctor Moore's untimely death. Visitation will be held at Dove-Witt Funeral Home, 6630 So Hwy 85-87, Fountain, CO from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 4th. His online memorial and guestbook can be viewed at www.dove-witt.com. Funeral services will be held at the Fusion Church at 331 N. Main Street, Security, CO at 1:00 o'clock p.m. Monday, August 5th. Reception to follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Private interment will be at Green Mountain Cemetery, Boulder, CO. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to CSU Foundation, PO Box 1870, Fort Collins, CO 80522. I am so sorry to hear of his passing, I have so many memories that include him and this breaks my heart! Dr. Moore was our vet in Fountain, Colorado for many year for all of our animals but he always would let me help in the care of our horses, even taught me how to give shots in the muscle of course!!! You are in my thoughts and prayers!

Well Doc, it has always been an honor knowing you, workng for you and watching our family's grow into highly respected individuals together. My memories are many lasting and heart felt. Lee Jones wrote a great poem paying tribute to you that pretty much sums up the feelings that we all have for you. Mardi will read it as a eulogy to you on Monday as we all say farewell until we meet again. I am glad I got to visit with you briefly at the hospital. Love you, Leslie A
