Robert Hanlon Ernster, age 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 15, 2013 after a long and full life. Born July 7, 1925, Bob was the eldest son of the late Clarence J. Ernster and Rose K. (Booth) Ernster. He was born in Clinton, Iowa, and graduated from Clinton High School. He enlisted in the US Army, serving with the 292nd Joint Assault Company in the Philippines during World War II. Following the war, Bob relocated to Colorado Springs to raise his family. He worked in men's retail for Bain's Clothing and KG Men's Store until his retirement. In addition, Bob was a devout Catholic and spent many years in service to his church. Never one to stay idle for long, Bob spent his days following retirement as a crossing guard at Columbia Elementary School. He is survived by his younger brother, Richard (Patricia) Ernster of Colorado Springs, Colorado, his 3 sons, Mark (Joy) Ernster of Calhan, Colorado, Gary (Donna) Ernster of Lake Villa, Illinois, and Jay Ernster of Chandler, Arizona. He was grandfather to 7, great grandfather to 14, and great great grandfather to 4, as well as uncle to several nieces and nephews. Viewing will be at Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. with memorial service immediately following. The family wishes to express their appreciation to everyone who helped provide the wonderful care and comfort to Bob during his last days and request in lieu of flowers, donations be made to any hospice organization of the giver's choice.
