Sue Nolen Biggs, 87, political advocate, real estate agent and quick-witted Texan died peacefully, July 26, surrounded by family, at a Colorado Springs hospice.
With her wispy helmet of snow white hair, Sue was affectionately known among El Paso County Republicans as "the jelly bean delegate" after handing out more than 20 pounds of jelly beans-Ronald Reagan's favorite candy-at the 5th Congressional District convention to help seal to her bid to become a 1988 GOP convention delegate.
Born to E.D. "Ed" and Selina Nolen, Aug. 3, 1926, in San Antonio, Texas, Sue was the second of three children. She was a 1943 Austin High School graduate and attended the University of Texas and Texas Tech University, serving on the library staff.
On Oct. 10, 1948 she married West Point graduate Buford Bernell Biggs, in a double-ring ceremony with full military rites at the Austin Presbyterian Seminary Chapel in Austin, Texas.
Sue would later describe the handsome young pilot to a local newspaper reporter as a "beautiful man," even though he was "a Yankee from Arkansas."
After retirement, the couple settled in Colorado Springs, Colo. in 1970 where Sue became active in local politics.
Although she never pushed political agendas on anyone, Sue did make it her business to ensure the voice of eligible voters was heard, regardless of party affiliation.
"Are you registered to vote?" she'd ask-often of total strangers-while rummaging deep in her purse for the voter registration forms she carried with her, especially during election years.
"I don't care who you vote for-even if it's for the wrong guy. Just get out there and vote!" she'd say with a stern, Lone Star drawl.
Idealistic and strong-willed, Sue approached both politics and life with equal passion. An accomplished traveler, she's stood on the Great Wall of China, handed out candy and American flags in the former Soviet Union and even in her late 70s, traveled to Taiwan to ride-like any good Republican-an elephant.
Sue is survived by an older brother, C.C. (Jitter) Nolen of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; a younger sister, Natalie Zoe Wright of San Antonio, Texas; three children, Barry Biggs of Centennial, Colo.; Susan Martin of Tacoma, Wash.; and Bryan Biggs of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Also surviving are Sue's five grandchildren: Travis Biggs of Colorado Springs, Colo., Trevor Martin of Tacoma Park, Md., Shelby Martin of Ft. Collins, Colo.; Dakota and Jackson Biggs of Colorado Springs, Colo. and a great-granddaughter Natalie Martin of Tacoma Park, Md.
Sue was preceded in death her parents and husband.
In honor of Sue, the family asks that you register-and vote-in the upcoming election of your choice.
