(Age 92) On February 7, 2013 in Colorado Springs, CO He was born on June 11, 1920 in Washington D.C. to Ewell Conway and Jessie Taylor Conway. Mr. Conway was preceded in death by both of his parents; one sister, Shirley McManus; his wife, Jesse E. Dedeaux Conway and son, Wallace Conway Jr. Wallace was a retired curator for the Exhibits Bureau of the New Jersey State Museum and a World War II veteran of the United States Coast Guard in the European theater of operations. He enjoyed a prolific career in the arts after completing his education at Miner Teachers College with further studies at Trenton State College, NJ; CU Colorado Springs, CO; as well as in residence at Paris-American University, Paris, France; New York University, Venice, Italy; and the Art Institute of Chicago, IL; culminating in a MA of Fine Arts from New York University. Wallace led a distinguished career in the arts, encompassing both fine and commercial disciplines. His thirty-eight year professional reach extended from owning a visual design studio to the Smithsonian Institute to museum administration for the state of New Jersey. He produced an extensive body of work as a freelance artist throughout - completing over 70 original pieces. He was an artist, leader, and trailblazer as the first black curator in the United States. Wallace was a loving husband, father, grandfather and cherished friend. His eagerness to share his passion for Jazz will always be remembered. He is kept in loving memory and survived by his daughters (Diane C. Pettie and Stephanie C. B. Victorian), his grandchildren (Gina Pettie Johnson, Eric Pettie, Erin and Carmen Conway, Kathryn V. Burrow, Benjamin R. Bufford, Sarah E. Victorian), numerous great grandchildren, and extended family. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday February 12, 1:00PM MST at Joyland Church 10605 Green Mountain Falls Rd, Green Mountain Falls, CO 80819 followed by interment at 2:30PM at Evergreen Cemetery located at 1005 S. Hancock Colorado Springs, CO 80903 and a celebration of the life of Wallace X. Conway at 4:00PM at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort 3225 Broadmoor Valley Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80906
