Donald M. Bergstrom, of Colorado Springs, CO passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was 93 years young. Born in 1920 in Lindsborg, Kansas. He was the son of the late Carl and Claudia Bergstrom.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife Esther Bergstrom.

He is survived by his sister Dorothy Jean Moore of Katy, Texas, his son Carl Bergstrom of Anchorage, Alaska, daughter Janet Hess of Colorado Springs, two grandchildren Laura Smith (Chris) and Del Hess of Colorado Springs, and two great grandchildren Jesse and Ashley Smith.

Don graduated from, Wyandott High School in 1938 and attended Junior College in Kansas City until 1941 when he joined the Air Force during WWII. He was a pilot in the 391st Bomb Squadron, and flew the B-26 Marauder Bomber in the European Theater. He was shot down twice over Germany and was a POW. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation.

After leaving the military in 1946, he went back to college and graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. He went to work for the US Bureau of Water Resources in Kansas as a Resident Engineer. He was hired by the Central Air Defense Command in 1953 and soon became the Director of Engineering Operation and Maintenance. In 1968, he moved to Anchorage, Alaska as Chief Engineer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the National Weather Service. He was awarded the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal for his leadership in the Administration of NOAA's Program to provide Flood forecast and storm warnings in Alaska. He retired in 1976 and moved to Colorado Springs, CO.

Don was a volunteer for Christmas Unlimited for a number of years and was a charter member of the Pikes Peak Jazz and Swing Society. He was an avid woodworker, building his own cabin in Westcliffe, CO. He loved music and played the drums and the trumpet.

He was an active member of Village Christian Church where Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday June 2nd.
