Royal (Roy) McMahon Wimpee passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 25, 2012 in Colorado Springs at the age of 90. He was born in Gadsden, Alabama, the son of Roy H and Lenora McMahan Wimpee, on December 9, 1921. He graduated from Gadsden High School and the University of Alabama, where he received a BS degree in 2 years, 11 months. He pursued post graduate work at Northwestern University in Chicago and received his MBA at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. After the death of his stepfather, he cared for his mother for 33 years until her death in 1982. At the age of 62, he married the love of his life, Earline Ridinger. They traveled extensively throughout the United States, visiting every state except North Dakota. They also traveled throughout the world including all of the countries in Europe except Spain, as well as South America, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. After Earline passed away in 2007, he divided his time between his home in San Antonio and with his niece and nephew, Bob and Valerie Ferguson, in Colorado Springs. Roy was born with a hearing impairment which prevented him from joining the military at the onset of World War II. To fulfill his overwhelming desire to serve his country, he went to work as a civilian at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, retiring after 35 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents. He is survived by a sister-in-law, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was buried in San Antonio. A memorial service will be held at St Matthias Episcopal Church, 18320 Furrow Rd in Monument, Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 10am. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ronald McDonald House, 311 North Logan Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80909.
