Patricia S. Espander died November 21, 2012, in Colorado Springs at age 89. A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 6, 2012, at 2:00 P.M., at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs. Patricia was born April 10, 1923, in Topeka, Kansas, to Charles and Mildred Sweet. She graduated from Topeka High School at age 16 and enrolled in the University of Colorado, from which she received a degree in electrical engineering in 1942. She was one of the first women graduates of the University of Colorado engineering school. She was a resident of Colorado Springs for 66 years. For most of her career she worked in the federal civil service as an engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Carson, NORAD, and U.S. Army bases in Germany. She was also a member of the Board of Council of Neighborhood Organizations in Colorado Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph D. Espander, Jr. She is survived by sons Michael J. Frederick and David R. Frederick, daughter Jean Frederick, step-daughter Connie L. Espander, eleven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by step-son John C. Espander.
