Donald Merle Odneal Obituary
Donald Merle Odneal went to be with the Lord and his family in Heaven January 18, 2014. He was surrounded by love until his last moment on Earth. He passed away at Community Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado with family by his side.

Don was born November 3, 1936 in his family's home in Palisade, Colorado. He was William France and Thelma Helen (Stitt) Odneal's 5th of 6 children and their youngest son.

Don graduated from Palisade High School in 1954. On June 2, 1955 he married the love of his life, Peggy Lou Foraker. They eloped to Raton, New Mexico. They were married until Peggy went to be with the Lord, a month before their Golden Anniversary.

In 1956, Don and Peggy moved to Colorado Springs. Don took a job with Mountain Bell that year. A full-time job was never enough to keep him busy, so he ranched and built homes on the side. He retired from Mountain Bell after 33 years.

He knew how to work hard, invest smart, and play hard too. Don was an avid Cowboy Polo player, traveling around the country for tournaments for many years. He was very active in the Kit Carson Riding Club and served as President of the club in 1965 and 1973. Every year that he lived in Colorado Springs, Don returned to the Grand Valley to hunt deer and elk, with family at Plateau Park, where he had hunted with his father as a young man. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Don and Peggy were blessed with two children. Donald Wesley was born in 1958 and Donna Lu was born in 1959.

In 1987 Don purchased a mobile home park in Palisade from his sister Susie and her husband Ronnie Martin. A few years later, Don and Peggy returned to their childhood home in the Grand Valley, joining forces with Don's son Wes and his wife, Linda to run the Palisade Mobile Home Park.

Don struggled with Multiple Sclerosis for 25 years but he rarely showed signs of his pain, especially to his family. He was always admired for his strength and his sincere refusal to give up.

Don never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was a very loving father, grandfather, and brother. He always helped others in any way he could. He set a shining example of character and integrity for his children and grandchildren, who were a great source of pride to him.

Don is preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Lou Odneal. He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Eugene (Melba) Odneal of Manitou Springs, CO; JT Odneal of Tucson, AZ; Genivee Lundy of Lompoc, CA; Susie Martin of Mesa, AZ; and Helen (David) Mestas of Grand Junction, CO. Don is also survived by his son Wes (Linda) Odneal of Palisade, CO and his daughter Donna Lu (Tim) Camper; his five grandchildren Hannah Odneal (Mack Newman), Holly Odneal, Joey Odneal, John Camper, and Morgan (Casey) Wiersma; and his great-grandchildren Paisley Sue Wiersma and Ciara Newman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in honor of Don Odneal to The Multiple Sclerosis Society (2232 N. 7th St. #14 Grand Junction, CO 81501) and The Palisade United Methodist Church.

A public viewing will be held at Palisade Funeral Home Wednesday January 22, 2014 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held Thursday January 23, 2014 at Palisade United Methodist Church at 10a.m. Graveside services follow immediately at the Palisade Cemetery.
