John W. Mitchell Obituary
John W. Mitchell, 84, formerly of Colorado Springs died Wednesday, January 22, 2014 from natural causes. He was born November 18, 1929 in Norfolk, Nebraska to John W. Mitchell and Lucille Gratton.

He graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1947. He went on to study at Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK graduating in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. After he separated from the military he worked as a pilot for United Airlines for 35 years. He flew multiple aircraft including the DC-3, DC-6, DC-7, DC-8, and DC-10. In addition he flew the B-720, B-727, B-737, and Convair 340. He retired in 1989 as a DC-10 captain.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Maryellen Mitchell of Woodland Park; a brother, Robert Mitchell of Colorado Springs; sons Don (Dee) Mitchell of Greeley, CO; Jerry Mitchell of Colorado Springs, CO; Jay (Deb) Mitchell of Owasso, OK; and two granddaughters, Megan Mitchell, and Erin Mitchell of Owasso, OK.

Services will be held in the spring at a future date at Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs, CO.

John served his country honorably, enjoyed a distinguished career as an airline pilot, and was an avid aviation and history enthusiast. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and will be missed by many.
