Marianne Stoller Obituary

Colorado College Professor Emerita of Anthropology Marianne Louise Stoller passed away at her home in Colorado Springs December 13, 2015. Born September 11, 1929, in Alamosa, CO, she grew up in San Luis. She earned her B.A. from Adams State College (1949), M.A. University of Denver (1955), Ph.D. University of Pennsylvania (1979). She was a Fulbright Scholar in New Zealand and Tahiti (1951-53).

Marianne taught at Colorado College from 1969-1998, twice chairing the Anthropology department. CC honored her significant service to the college with its Gresham Riley Award in 2014. She also taught at UCCS. She published three books and numerous articles, was president of the American Society for Ethnohistory, served as a National Endowment for the Humanities panelist, and was on the board of the Colorado Endowment for the Humanities. An accomplished artist, she illustrated books and worked in museums.

Through courses and trips, Marianne loved introducing students, alumni, and friends to the arts, cultures, history, and landscapes of the Southwest. She co-founded the CC Southwest Studies program, taught ethnohistory in Santa Fe, ran an archeological excavation of a 17th century New Mexico hacienda, and conducted numerous tours to benefit CC's Women's Educational Society. She was also a devoted trout fisherwoman.

After a landmark legal case that returned land use rights to the people of San Luis, she received an award from The Colorado Lawyers Commission for her work as an expert witness.

Marianne leaves her daughter Moana Kutsche, granddaughter Brigid Ehrmantraut, son-in-law Brian Ehrmantraut, all of Eastsound, WA; nephew Fred Tessler, of Colorado Springs; former husband Paul Kutsche, of Grand Rapids, MI.

All are welcome to a Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 15, at 4 p.m. at Shove Chapel, Colorado College.
