Norma Picard Obituary

ELLINGTON, Conn. - Norma Picard, 68, lost her 30 year battle with multiple sclerosis and died at home Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Holyoke, Mass., and grew up in Easthampton, Mass. She later moved with her family to Enfield, and then they moved to Ellington, where she lived for 25 years. In 2001, she and her husband moved to Hinesville, Ga.

Her greatest joy was being with her family. She enjoyed going on vacations and hosting cook-outs. Norma was very active in her churches, she organized Christmas bazaars and taught catechism. She volunteered at her children's schools and started a hot lunch program. She was also active in the St. Martha's Players.

Norma was employed as the executive assistant to the Somers, Conn., first selectman.

Norma is predeceased by her father, Norman Peloquin, who died when she was a young child; her stepfather, George Vekakis; and her aunt, Gertrude Pelchat.

Norma is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Daniel Picard of Hinesville; her mother, Esther Vekakis of Easthampton; three daughters, Melissa Gallagher and her husband Michael of Woodbine, Md., Kristen Picard-Wambolt and her husband Harry of Ellington, and Melanie Higley and her husband Joseph of Hinesville; and her pride and joy, her grandchildren, Kevin, John and Nathan Gallagher, Joseph and Deanna Wambolt and Breanne, Joshua and Ryan Higley.

Her funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, at St. Luke Catholic Church in Ellington, immediately followed by her burial.

(Due to inclement weather, the services for Norma Picard, who died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, will be changed to Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at 1 p.m. at St. Lukes in Ellington, Conn.)

Kris and Family-there are no words adequately enough to say how deeply sorry I am for your loss. Just know I am here if ever you need a friend to talk to-your mom was a beautiful person and so positive. I will cherish the memories I have of times spent with her. Love Tammy
